Escaped teddies may be roaming Bournemouth!
To celebrate holding its Annual General Meeting this year in Bournemouth, national women’s organisation, Townswomen’s Guilds, is unleashing an explosion of knitted street-art on Bournemouth’s sea-front, as the city is ‘Yarn-bombed’. From 27th - 28th June a riot of colourful hand-made woollen pieces will adorn the lower gardens in the city centre.
The organisation also knits blankets for women suffering with fistulas in the Hamlin Fistula Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, along with baby clothes and teddy bears for their babies. However, the project has hit a problem. The ladies of TG have lost a crate of teddies that should have been shipped.
‘We’re not sure what’s happened, but a whole crate of teddies has gone missing. Perhaps they have escaped,” said Jennifer Thorne, TG Board Member. “They should have been dispatched, but the consignment was a crate short.”
“We are slightly concerned about the teddies – they are quite small to be out on their own,” continued Jennifer, with a wink. “I’d like to make an appeal to the people of Bournemouth. If you find one of the teddies lost on the sea-front or in the lower gardens, please pick it up and take it home with you. They need to be looked after.”
Townswomen’s Guilds is one of the largest women’s organisations in the UK, and with 700 Guilds and 24,000 members is experiencing something of a renaissance with a ‘new generation’ of members which is attracted by the events, friendship, crafts, opportunities to try new things and the campaigning on social issues offered collectively and by individual Guilds around the country.

We were a cheerful group with some of our number clad in 80s ‘going out’ favourites of bright wigs, leg warmers and fingerless gloves plus oversized earrings and clusters of necklaces. Could Alvin Stardust teach you how to cross the road, when seen wearing a glove with a ring on the outside of it? And was a bum bag the best way to keep your valuables safe?
