Istanbul Convention -UK closer to ratifying

A few minutes ago MPs agreed to the second reading of a bill against domestic violence which would require the Government to ratify the Istanbul Convention as soon as possible.

The passing was a herculean effort, as the house rises today for the Christmas break, but the necessary 100 MP minimum was met and the bill was passed to the committee stage by 135 votes to 2. Home Office Minister Brandon Lewis announced that the bill had Government support subject to a couple of reservations about timetables.

It was lovely to see  so many Women MPs in the house. The bill was proposed by SNP MP Eilidh Whiteford and women from all parties spoke the most memorable being Jess Philips, Wendy Morton, Sarah Champion and Thangam Debbonach.

Thank you to all our members who urged their MP to vote.
