Yarn-bomb’ about to explode in Bournemouth

An explosion of knitted street-art is about to be unleashed on Bournemouth’s sea-front, as the city is ‘Yarn-bombed’. From 27th - 28th June a riot of colourful hand-made woollen pieces will adorn the lower gardens in the city centre. The installation is being staged by members of the national women’s organisation, Townswomen’s Guilds, which has chosen to hold its Annual General Meeting this year in Bournemouth’s Purbeck Hall, at the International Centre in Exeter Road.

‘We’re very excited to be holding our AGM in Bournemouth and many of our members have been ‘knitting up a storm’ so that we could announce our presence in the city with a bang,” explains Janice Collins, TG Board Member.

‘Yarn-bombing’ or ‘Yarnstorming’ was born in the USA around ten years ago and is now a growing phenomenon in the UK and around the world. This guerilla or graffiti knitting movement has seen statues, railings, streets lamps, trees and even cars and buildings covered in brightly coloured knitting.

“It’s great fun to do,” continued Janice, “and people seem to love it. It’s great to see how many smiles it brings to faces. We’re looking forward to meeting lots of Bournemouth people – everyone is welcome to come along to see what’s going on.”
