TG ‘Yarn-bombs’ Bournemouth for Annual General Meeting
To celebrate holding its AGM this year in Bournemouth, national women’s organisation Townswomen’s Guilds unleashed an explosion of knitted street-art on Bournemouth’s sea-front, as the city was ‘Yarn-bombed’. From Monday 27th until Tuesday 28th June, the city’s lower gardens and sea-front were adorned in amazing hand-made woollen installations.
Local residents and visitors walking through the gardens were greeted by a riot of colour, with trees wrapped in knitted bandanas and bunting, hand-made woollen figures (including the Queen, butterflies, mice and other animals) and a beautiful knitted deck chair, bucket and spade.
TG members had travelled from all over the UK to take part in the ‘Yarn-bombing’ and also to hide thirty hand-made teddies, knitted in TG colours, for people to find. A message went out on local media asking visitors to find the ‘lost’ teddies and take care of them. Children (and some adults!) scoured the gardens and within an hour all the bears had been found. Among the many messages on TG’s Facebook page, happy parent Tatiana Hibberd, posted on behalf of her daughter: ‘This is Upperty... Found him today in Bournemouth gardens! Thank you Townswomens's Guilds. Love Dahlia.’
The organisation also knits blankets for women suffering with fistulas in the Hamlin Fistula Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, along with baby clothes and teddy bears for their babies. ‘We were absolutely delighted with the reaction to the Yarn-bombing and the lost teddies,” said Jenny Thorne, TG Board Member. “It all helps to draw attention to the TG and some of the great campaigning work that its members do.”
Townswomen’s Guilds is one of the largest women’s organisations in the UK, and with 700 Guilds and 24,000 members is experiencing something of a renaissance with a ‘new generation’ of members which is attracted by the events, friendship, crafts, opportunities to try new things and the campaigning on social issues offered collectively and by individual Guilds around the country.
