Japanese Folded Patchwork

Difficulty: 3 stars difficulty rating
You will need:
Piece of card for templates
Fabric - plain for base approx 30cm square and patterned for middle, approx 15cm square
Wadding
Matching thread
Needle
Iron

Instructions:

Cut a card template , a circle 15cm in diameter and another one, 10.5 square.

Cut plain fabric 1cm larger all round the circle.

Gather edges of fabric round the circle to fit the card template.

Iron edges of fabric, with card inside, to get a sharp edge, then carefully remove card.

Using the square template cut out wadding and patterned fabric to exact size.

Place wadding in middle of circle, which should be face down, and put patterned piece on top.

Fold over the edges and quilt, an even running stitch. See photo. A quick press with an iron may be necessary.

This can be used as a coaster, or you could make several and sew them together to make a cushion, lap quilt, baby's blanket or, if you are adventurous, a bed quilt.
