Women in Parliament

While TG has a strong focus on topics which affect everyone, we cannot ignore that politically, women are poorly represented. While not an officially mandated TG campaign, nevertheless we feel it is important to highlight where significant work needs to be done, and to call our members to educate themselves on the situation in their areas and respond accordingly.

The base point for this being particularly relevant now stems from an article on the Local Government Excecutive website which highlights just how poorly the UK stands in terms of female representation in local and national Government, having slipped in global rankings for representation from 25th in 1999 all the way to 48th currently. It also outlines potential solutions to encourage further representation and ensure that women have a strong voice within Government.

Taking Action

In light of the above article, we would encourage all of our members to investigate their local Governments in terms of how many women are involved and particularly in key roles.
We would also encourage members to write to their local MPs as well as to national Government and challenge them to make positive changes to encourage more women into Parliament and local Government - ask them how they intend to tackle this issue and see the UK start moving in the right direction when considering representation on a global scale.
